My life in a few words: radio, dance music, clubbing, studios, web design, (a bit of medicine) and F**K loads of alcohol.
My favourite place in the world would be sitting in front of a mixer and a microphone in a radio studio, Vibe FM, Galaxy 105, Capital FM would probably rank very highly! However, CUR1350 (http://www.cur1350.co.uk) will do for now...
That saves you from the effort of reading - My life in a few MORE words:
I used to work for a very unusual radio station which dipped its toes in broadcasting across the South-East of England. How did I get there? Well the story goes (and I've made no effort to dress this up with pretty synonyms and similies)....
In late 2000, a man moved into my street in my lovely village. His name was Andi. At this point in time my interests in radio were just listening occasionally... The first time I spoke to him I he was walking down the street with a £1,200 mixer, which he managed to drop on the street right in front of me. We then proceeded to chat about what he thought he was up to, and when he moved in etc, and he happened to mention a "youth radio scheme" in there somewhere. His plan was to recruit a few media students from the local college, and run an internet station from his converted-garage studio. After failing to find a media student who could actually turn up on time, he kindly asked me if I fancied a go...
In 2001, I sat in on a few media student shows, played around with the mixer at the end, and generally behaved like an irresponsible little sh*t. Eventually I began presenting on weekends. This lasted until summer 2001, (GCSE time) when after a break for exams, I decided to use the free time wisely and took up drivetime presenting. This carried on through summer when we conducted a 28 day broadcast on FM and through into Autumn where I ran school A Levels (7am - 4pm) and the radio show (5pm - 7pm) every weekday without fail. I then began to recruit a few friends to the station (giving birth to the crazy Mike & Will show) and we moved into 2002.
In 2002, the station converted to playing dance music (to my quiet delight!), beefed up its internet feeds and started to receive money from advertisers. We ran two more FM RSLs, I took to broadcasting 6 days a week, and ran this through my AS-levels all the way to summer. In summer we moved out of the garage and into a professional 2 studio complex in the local town. This continued into 2003.
In 2003 things began to really move. We secured a licence and bandwidth to broadcast on DAB digital radio across the area. DAB was beginning to take off and we experienced a massive hike in listenership (peak 40,000). Of course not having a car, travelling in on weekends presented a problem, so I began to build up a home studio, and by mid 2003, started broadcasting my shows from back in the village again. Things began to move faster, and in summer 2003, we looked into broadcasting on Freeview, Sky Digital etc. Through my crazy world of balancing school and radio I managed to get 4As (97% in Physics) and spent the following summer do nothing but radio.
Sadly... all good things have to come to an end. A particular London "dance" music station given it's considerable funding from it's international parent media company, was able to significantly outbid us for the DAB bandwidth. Andi decided to quit whilst he was ahead (a decision I still highly commend him for doing), shutting down the station and sadly, on the 27th August 2003, we left the radio station (but not before grabbing my fair share of studio and transmission equipment, and grabbing control of the station website for my own purposes!) The website became a fantasy extension of the whole radio project, as though I'd extrapolated the course of the station by a year...
During this time I stayed off the air and went to Cambridge...
Then in November I found CUR1350!
I began presenting a new brand of dance music show in January on a Friday (then moved to Saturday) night, and in June I landed a position on the committee as Head of Promotions.
So you may have noticed that I haven't said much about education, friends, my home... well anything apart from radio! To put your mind at rest, I've always been a keen scientist, but opted for a Medical course as I felt university was a wake-up-call to try and apply my life to a career. I frequently whinge about not doing Natural Sciences - its a FAR more interesting course... but I know that I'd be climbing the walls if ended up stuck in a lab all day for the rest of my life. So yeah - I ended up becoming a bloody medical student!
When not studying or on the radio / talking about radio / thinking about radio I'm usually found getting drunk in a particular friend's room, watching Matt flirt with really unsuitable people, or out in some club somewhere listening to cuts of house and trance at really unhealthy volumes.
Uni has been an interesting experience... I've met such a wide range of fantastic people, all so different yet sharing some common indescribable something. I've led a lifestyle of such high velocity that I couldn't document it even if I followed myself round with a camera team. Things have happened to me, both good and notibly bad, and despite severe derailment during exams in exam term, I still managed to secure a 2.1 in Medicine at Cambridge.
I'm a person who likes things to move (not necessarily physically)! I'm one of these people with the annoying habit of never being satisfied with current situations and always has to improve on everything. I'm an atheist and proud of it. My aim in life is to become (at least) friends with everyone, and "achieve financial security" (i.e. get rich). Despite the opening essay, radio probably isn't where I'll be heading for a career... it's a hobby and i'm pretty certain turning a hobby into a job will simply spoil the enjoyment of it (ask a porn star).
